Sleep Talk With Petra Leslie

We’re pretty fond of this one. Petra Leslie is a creative and one half of film-making studio, Cutting Shapes. She was born in Melbourne, half Australian, half Greek. She describes her home as a tropical, Greek sanctuary - we thought that description was pretty spot on after visiting her abode.

What are projects are you working on at the moment?
I have a couple projects bubbling away. The first is an ongoing series of documentary shorts about people and their jobs called Work Docs. It’s for anyone who has ever had a job they’ve loved, a job they’ve hated, a life-long calling or a way to make an easy buck.  Another is a called Femcore, which aims to make wearable feminism and in doing so bring feminism into popular dialogue. Thirdly, a couple of mates and I have started holding little shotgun art shows in homes, only one so far – ‘Young St presents Young Art’ – but it was such a laugh that more are on their way.

What time do you go to bed? And get up?
In winter it seems to get earlier and earlier, but I guess on average 11.30. Morning’s I get up at 7 for 8. It’s all about zipping to the kitchen, making a coffee, going back to bed, news, weather, spilling a little single origin on your PJ’s, saying ‘Sh*t again’ mopping it and then once that routine is done, I’m out the door.

Do you think you get enough sleep? And, is sleep important to you?
Sleep and the moments before are bliss, I love it when its cold out, and you get into bed and it slowly gets warm and you think ‘that’s all me, ya queen – I'm a radiator right now.’

Do you remember last night’s dream?
Something about cheese toasties.

Do you use an alarm? If so, does it ever change?
I do. My alarm is a godsend. I use my iPhone except every time I change it from my normal time, which uses the ‘twinkle’ sound, it decides to switch to ‘barking dog’. I have no idea why Apple decided that a barking dog was a good way to wake up - bunch of masochists.

In three words, how would you describe you bedroom?
Tropical, Greek, Sanctuary.

Do you live on your own?
No, I live with my partner Tom Alber, and three others.

Do Tom and your housemates have the same sleeping pattern as you?
Pretty much.

Do you have anything to help you get to sleep?
A book, some HBO and a cup of tea.

What is the first thing you do in the morning?
Make a coffee and go back to bed.

What is for breakfast?
Black coffee, toast and a smoothie.

When do you think you are most productive?
Late at night, there are always fewer distractions.

Is there anything exciting coming up for you?
I’m hoping to move next year, Mexico or Europe (sorry Mum).

Best sleep you’ve ever had?
Last night, or perhaps the night before that.
